Let’s be honest. You never cared for your ceiling!

A ceiling is the most fundamental part of any home, and yet it is often the most underrated piece that has the potential to become a beautiful decorative element.

Usually, when homeowners look to refurbish their homes or construct one, they plan everything to the T. Every room has a backstory. Every color has significance. Every decor piece is a statement. But ceilings? They are often forgotten, primarily because of their location, and left blank.

But we’ll not let your ceilings be. Let’s spruce up your ceiling – with false ceilings!

What is a False Ceiling?

A false ceiling is a secondary ceiling that’s installed below the primary roof. It is usually made of gypsum boards, Plaster of Paris (POP), glass, PVC, wood, fibre cement, and metal. Homeowners primarily prefer a false ceiling (also known as a dropped or suspended ceiling) for its aesthetic appeal, insulation benefits, and modern appearance.

False ceilings are increasingly popular in contemporary interiors, especially in expansive luxury apartments in Bangalore, because they are both functional and a design flair.

Types of False Ceilings

1. Gypsum False Ceiling

Chemically known as calcium sulfate dihydrate, gypsum is a natural mineral used in the production of gypsum boards for interior design. They come in various sizes, ranging from 4×8 ft. to 4×10 ft., and thicknesses of 9mm, 12mm, and 15mm. Gypsum boards are then cut into the required sizes to make gypsum false ceilings.

Pros:

  • Gypsum boards are cheap and don’t incur additional installation costs.
  • They are durable and lightweight.
  • Easy to dry and energy-efficient
  • Excellent acoustic properties. Absorbs sound and eliminates echoing.
  • Adds insulation for better temperature control.

Cons:

  • They look elegant only in high ceilings and may feel a little cramped in low ceilings.
  • Gypsum is prone to water retention due to its low density.
  • They can’t be moulded and crack easily without proper maintenance.

2. POP (Plaster of Paris) Ceiling

Plaster of Paris is a white, quick-setting powder made by heating gypsum. It is a widely used material in false ceilings and sculpting. It hardens when mixed with water and dries quickly.

Pros:

  • POP is a highly versatile material that can be carved into decorative mouldings.
  • It is fire-resistant and doesn’t crack under pressure.
  • Gives a smooth, perfect finish with no visible joints.
  • Suitable for all types of lighting and gives a 3D effect to your home.

Cons:

  • It’s slightly more expensive than gypsum.
  • Susceptible to moisture and requires reinforcement when hanging heavy furniture.
  • Requires expertise while moulding and installing.
  • It’s not easy to remove after installation.

3. Wooden False Ceiling

Wooden false ceilings are typically made of real wood or a look-alike wooden material, often composed of veneers, laminates, or lacquers. It is one of the most luxurious types of false ceilings, adding natural warmth without burning a hole in your pocket, similar to the ones found in Kessaku apartments.

Pros:

  • It’s energy-efficient, acting as a perfect coolant.
  • Offers sturdiness, so you can install as many lighting fixtures as needed.
  • Wooden panels can be easily mounted and dismantled.

Cons:

  • Wooden false ceilings are prone to termite attacks and warping during extreme humid conditions.
  • More expensive than POP and Gypsum.
  • It’s high-maintenance, requiring frequent dusting.

4. PVC False Ceiling

One of the most versatile, lightweight, water-resistant false ceiling materials is Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC). It is ideal for the kitchen and bathrooms, giving a sleek, minimalist look.

  • PVC ceilings are resistant to moisture and termite attacks.

  • Balance aesthetics with functionality: A bold design may look stylish, but it must also be easy to maintain and care for.
